Sweet Schwinn reunion

Truth be told, except for the chilly temperatures, this year's winter weather here in Maine was basically absent of the normal snow and icy conditions. And thus not many days of gunky roads. But it was only this week that I finally switched to one of my typical two-wheeled road machines.

I'd been riding either of my two Specialized beasts — the fat bike or gravel bike. Both, of which, are heavy and cumbersome. Especially, with their bulky studded tires.

So, I've gone lighter, which is a necessity — given the fact that during my upcoming Belgium trip there will be a 90-mile ride on day two. Therefore, there is the need to build up some mileage and the accompanying endurance. I'm now utilizing my 1988 Schwinn Circuit, which reunites me with an old friend.

Believe it or not, I hadn't been on this 36-year-old treasure since the 2022 season. Not once did I ride it last year. Why, you might ask? That's a very good question.

It is still one of my favorite bicycles; I would never get rid of it. The steel tubing is extra small, certainly compared to today's standards. It's fast and it glides like the wind. And with 23mm tires, indexed shifting, and seven-speed cassette, it's definitely a relic. Being off it for so long, it felt a bit awkward at first. Going from flat platform pedals, which both Specialized bikes have, to clipless added to the strangeness. But I'm up to speed now, as they say, and it feels really good being strapped to the sleek machine.

In just over two weeks I'll be heading to Europe with my daughter Sophie and her good friend. My goal was to accumulate at least a thousand miles before departing for my Trek Travel adventure. I'm not quite there yet, with 42 miles remaining. But I'm sure I'll reach the magic number — and more than likely exceed it.

I'm just gathering up some last-minute items for the five-day vacation. Trek Travel has indicated that the group size is still currently at five cyclists — along with the two guides. The excitement is without a doubt building up for yours truly. Stay safe!
